(Solved) 17 Common Conditions Treated With The Bowen Technique
In this previous article we reviewed 17 RARE conditions that can be treated with Bowen Therapy, and today we’ll review 17 COMMON conditions that can be treated with Bowen Therapy. These are the general aches and pains of life that we all experience.
Firstly – What Is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy involves a series of massage-like movements to stimulate the body’s soft connective tissue (fascia). By relaxing the fascia, Bowen opens up the body’s natural channels for healing by dropping stress hormones (cortisol) and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system.
This video by Integrated Bowen Therapy, offers a 30 minute full demonstration to show exactly how the Bowen Treatment works:

1 – Does Bowen Therapy Help With Anxiety?
Bowen Therapy works by calming the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest). By relaxing the body and reducing stress hormones (cortisol), Bowen allows patients to enter a calm state and reduce feelings of anxiety.
Harvard Medical School published this article on Understanding the Stress Response, explaining how chronic stress over-activates the sympathetic nervous system, overloading the body’s resources to cope, and potentially leading to anxiety, depression, addictions, heart disease and more.
Bowen Therapy works directly to reduce stress, by encouraging the body to enter a calm state of relaxation. By inducing relaxation, the body’s ‘rest & digest’ parasympathetic nervous system is able to kick in, and allows the body to enter a state of calm natural healing.
2 – Does Bowen Therapy Help Back Pain?
Back pain is a common condition in people aged 40+, likely resulting from muscle or ligament strain. Bowen Therapy offers back pain relief by allowing the small muscles of the back to relax and realign themselves. Bowen Therapy similarly is effective for a wide range of aches and pains.
Almost every adult will have some level of back pain in their life. The Mayo Clinic reports that the most common risk factors for back pain are age (40+), lack of exercise, being overweight, diseases like arthritis or cancer, psychological conditions, and lastly smoking.
Additionally the most common causes of back pain include: muscle or ligament strain, bulging or ruptured disks, Arthritis, and Osteoporosis. If the spine is out of alignment, has poor posture, and has to carry a lot of excess weight, it is not surprising that back pain will ensue.
Bowen Therapy works by helping the body to relax, and to allow natural healing to occur. By relaxing the body, blood circulation and lymphatic activity is increased, and the body is triggered into realigning itself, decreasing inflammation and pain.
3 – Can Bowen Help Posture?
Poor posture is caused by sedentary lifestyles, occupational demands, muscle tightness and stiffness. The Bowen Technique helps relax and calm the body, allowing muscles to stretch and move freely. Looser muscles and increased awareness help patients stand taller with stronger posture.
This study by ThePhysioCompany defined postural dysfunction or ‘poor posture’ as when the spine is positioned in unnatural positions, which over a prolonged period of time puts pressure on the joints, muscles and vertebrates, leading to significant pain and discomfort.
Poor posture and spinal alignment can disrupt the body’s natural healing mechanisms, by making it difficult for nerve signals and energy to flow to the right places. By relaxing the body through Bowen Therapy, it is able to reestablish alignment, and start the process of healing.
Improved posture will not only make you feel taller, stronger and happier, but can also relieve issues around joint pain, headaches, difficulty sleeping, digestive problems, as well as generally improved back, neck, shoulder, knee, ankle, and foot strength & performance.
4 – Can Bowen Help With Muscle Tension?
Muscle tension is when muscles remain semi-contracted for prolonged periods due to stress, high cortisol levels and the body being locked in ‘fight or flight’. Bowen Therapy engages the parasympathetic nervous system allowing the body to relax and relieving muscle tension.
A review done by SpineHealth found that muscle tension is often caused by the psychological effects of stress, which can lead to episodes of back pain. When the body is under stress the sympathetic nervous system kicks in which can constrict blood vessels, ultimately reducing blood flow to nerves, tendons and muscles.
This can lead to a viscous feedback cycle, where tense muscles increases stress, and increased stress can further constrict tense muscles. SpineHealth recommends that muscle tension can typically be relieved with non-surgical treatments, including heat therapy, water therapy and exercise.
Bowen Therapy takes a holistic view to the human body and doesn’t see muscle tension operating in isolation to the rest of the body, but rather understands how the entire body works as one unified whole.
By allowing the body to enter a state of relaxation, dropping cortisol levels and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, Bowen allows the body to enter its own natural state of healing. Through relaxing the entire body, muscle tension is relieved, and mobility increased.
5 – Is Bowen Therapy Good For Lower Back Pain?
Lower back pain is caused by damaged intervertebral discs, nerve compression and misalignment of the spinal joints. Bowen Therapy applies gentle movements encouraging the body to rest and relax. In this state of relaxation, it is able to stretch and relieve lower back pain.
Research by SpineHealth further identified that soft-tissue injuries as well as mechanical issues are typically the cause of lower back pain, with the single most common cause of lower back pain coming from a pulled ligament or torn muscle.
Bowen Therapy has a lumbar treatment designed specifically to work with the lower back. The focus is on reducing inflammation and stiffness of lower back muscles (lumbar). Bowen Therapy uses small, gentle moves that stretch the soft connective tissues and allow healing to take place.
6 – Can Bowen Help Shoulder Pain?
Shoulder pain can be caused by Arthritis, torn cartilage, or pinched nerves in the neck. Bowen Therapy works to untangle knots in the body, by helping it to relax and reach a state of calm. In this state, the body is able to realign and relieve shoulder pain.
The Government of Australia published a study stating that Bowen Therapy was effective (and safe) at treating sports and accident injuries, frozen shoulders, stress disorders, neck and head tension, among others.
Bowen Therapy uses small, gentle moves on the body’s soft connective tissue (fascia) to engage the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest), allowing the body to enter a state of calm healing. This allows it to naturally work through any pain or inflammation in the shoulder.
7 – Can Bowen Help Neck Pain?
Neck pain can be caused by muscle strains, worn joints, arthritis, or even nerve compression. Bowen Therapy uses gentle movements on the fascia to reduce cortisol levels in the body and encourage natural healing. In a calm state, Bowen can help relieve neck pain.
In 2013, the Government of Victoria in Australia published a study finding that the Bowen Technique was a suitable therapy for treating a wide range of conditions, including neck pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, musculoskeletal pain & imbalance, and chronic fatigue among others.
The Bowen Technique uses a series of small moves along the neck, to not only help it to relax, but to open up the body’s natural channels of healing. By increasing blood circulation and lymphatic flow, the body is able to work through inflammation in the neck and realign itself.
8 – Can Bowen Therapy Help Migraines?
Migraines are believed to be caused by abnormal brain activity, which can temporarily impact blood flow, chemical balances, and nerve signals in the brain. Bowen Therapy calms the body and engages the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest), relieving migraine symptoms.
In 2011, a study by Hansen & Talor-Piliae found that Bowen had universally been found to improve health-related results, including a reduction of pain, increased mobility and less frequent migraines.
Bowen Therapy is effective at easing the body into a calm state of self-healing, helping it to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. Bowen can be an effective tool as part of your general treatments, to ensure your body is aligned and performing at its best.
9 – Can Bowen Help Constipation?
Constipation is often caused by lifestyle factors, low fiber intake, low water intake, minimal exercise, changes to your typical routine including air travel, different diets or being jet lagged. Bowen Therapy uses gentle moves on the fascia to encourage rest and digestion, relieving symptoms of constipation.
The following is a testimonial from BowenHealth.nl: “I took my 3 year old daughter for Bowen as she had real bad constipation, after initial treatment it was a good bit better but after the second, it cleared up altogether, I was told children respond remarkably well to this treatment but I didn’t expect so easily!”
The best part of Bowen is its soft and gentle nature, allowing the body to relax and reduce cortisol levels. Most of us carry high levels of stress in our lives, keeping our sympathetic nervous system active, but Bowen engages the parasympathetic nervous system to induce healing.
10 – Can Bowen Therapy Help With Joint Pain?
Joint pain can be caused by disease or injury, including arthritis, strains, sprains and repetitive sports injuries. Bowen Therapy uses a series of small, gentle movements, to increase blood flow and circulation through the body, relieving symptoms of joint pain and improving mobility.
The Government of Victoria in Australia conducted clinical trials in 2013, and found Bowen to be an effective solution for sports injuries, accidents, stress disorders, neck and head tension, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more. Bowen was found to be effective at relieving pain.
11 – Can Bowen Therapy Help Sinus Problems?
Sinus problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including seasonal allergies, viruses, dusts and molds. Bowen Therapy uses gentle moves to relax the body and increase lymphatic circulation. This can help to drain congestion, and relieve symptoms of sinus pain.
In 2011, researchers Hansen & Taylor-Piliae found Bowen to be an effective therapy in relieving a range of conditions including sinus problems, chronic pain, asthma, ADHD, depression, anxiety and more. Bowen is a calming therapy that allows the body to self-heal.
12 – Can Bowen Help With Depression?
Depression is a medical condition that causes feelings of sadness, loneliness, and a general loss of interest in life. Bowen Therapy uses physical touch, in small, massage-like moves that help to calm and relax the body. By reducing cortisol levels, the body is able to de-stress and heal, bringing a newfound lightness, and relieving symptoms of depression.
Researchers Hansen & Taylor-Piliae found in 2011 that Bowen was an effective treatment in dealing with various conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and asthma among others. Bowen is a gentle therapy that relaxes the body and encourages self-healing.
Bowen Therapy includes a set of very specific and targeted moves, that are small and gentle, which stretch and relax the body’s soft connective tissue. By inducing a state of calm, relaxation, the body is able to heal, and feelings of depression can start to dissipate.
13 – Can Bowen Help With Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue is likely caused by viral infections, hormonal imbalances, or emotional distress. Bowen Therapy uses a gentle and relaxing technique to stretch the body’s soft connective tissue (fascia). This allows the body to enter a deep state of calm, relieving symptoms of chronic fatigue.
In 2013, the Government of Victoria in Australia, published clinical studies which documented the effectiveness of Bowen Therapy to effectively relieve chronic fatigue (among other conditions, including: whiplash, bedwetting, digestive problems, carpal tunnel syndrome and colic).
See this video here by NaturalColicRelief, on how Bowen can be used in the treatment of Colic:
14 – Can Bowen Help With Hip Pain?
Hip pain is typically caused by injuries (Bursitis), pinched nerves (Sciatica) or arthritis (Rheumatoid arthritis). The Bowen Technique uses a series of gentle moves to calm the body and engage the parasympathetic nervous system. This allows healing and relieving hip pain symptoms.
The Government of Australia published clinical studies in 2013, which found Bowen Therapy to be effective at relieving symptoms of musculoskeletal pain and imbalances, including hip pain, as well as: sports injuries, frozen shoulder, and carpal tunnel syndrome among others.
Bowen Therapy includes a set of moves which focus specifically on the Pelvic & Sacrum areas of the body. These small, gentle movements work right on the hip bursae area to begin reducing pain and inflammation. The technique is gentle and fast, and works right on the soft connective tissue.
15 – Can Bowen Help With Knee Pain?
Knee pain can be caused by a torn ACL, fractures, a torn meniscus, or tendonitis. Bowen Therapy involves a series of gentle, rolling hand moves that relax the body, reduce cortisol levels, and allow natural healing to take place, and relieving knee pain symptoms.
In 2012, The Bowen Therapy Professional Association conducted a National Study focusing on knee and ankle pain, which demonstrated positive results, with 88% cases showing at least a partial or complete recovery after a series of only 3 treatments Bowen Treatments.
The Bowen Techniques includes a series of moves specifically focusing on the knee, ankles, tendons and bursae. The technique uses a series of gentle moves, to deeply relax the body, reduce pain and inflammation in the knee, and bring about a state of calm healing.
16 – Can Bowen Help With Whiplash?
Whiplash occurs after a rapid and unexpected movement of the head, often from car accidents or sports injuries. Bowen Therapy uses gentle moves that calm the body, reduce cortisol levels, and engage the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the body to heal and relieve whiplash symptoms.
The Victorian Government of Australia in 2013 publish a clinical study, which found that Bowen Therapy was an effective treatment of whiplash, as well as musculoskeletal conditions, acute & chronic fatigue, carpal tunnel syndrome, colic, sports injuries among many others.
Bowen Therapy has a set of specific moves designed to focus right on the head and neck regions of the body. Using a system of small, rolling hand moves, Bowen Therapy is able to work the soft connective tissue, and induce a state of natural healing within the body.
17 – Can Bowen Help With Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve runs through the lower back and legs, and when pinched can cause intense pain referred to as Sciatica. Bowen Therapy uses a system of gentle moves to calm and relax the body, allowing it to heal naturally, and relieve symptoms of Sciatica.
In 2013, the Government of Australia published a scientific research paper, stating that Bowen Therapy was effective at treating Sciatica, among other conditions including: back pain, migraines, hay fever, and respiratory conditions.
Bowen Therapy includes a targeted set of moves which focus specifically on the Sciatic Nerve. Bowen works to relax muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the nervous system, allowing the pinched Sciatic Nerve to be relieved. In this state of calm, the body is able to heal itself.
